  1. “Annie and the Old One,” is an excellent children’s story that shows the relationship between a Navajo child and her grandmother. The main character, Annie, shows love towards her grandmother. This is shown when Annie tries to prevent the rug from being completed, so her grandmother does not die. The fact that she would destroy something, that her mother worked hard on, shows how much she loves her grandmother. The book also gives a small amount of information about the Navajo Indians. It shows how they relate everything to nature. Eg: When Annie’s grandmother says she would return to the earth. (This means that she is going to die). I also admire the illustration in the story. They give Annie’s grandmother a large amount of wrinkles to show how old she is. This also symbolizes wisdom. The older the person seems, the wiser they appears to be. Overall I thought that the story was very well written and is an excellent source to learn about the Navajo culture.

  2. The story “Anne and the Old One” by Miska Miles is based on the Navajo culture. It has many different lessons and sub-topics as opposed to other children’s literature. The main theme I found to be interesting is the passing of tradition. In sports, when a player who plays in a current era is considered to be the best player, it is common that you hear others say “the torch has been passed on to him” and that is what happened in “Anne and the Old One”. The Navajo culture is reflected in this story of being one with significance in tradition. The grandmother passed the tradition along to the mother, who then passed it to the Anne. I can relate this to my culture. In my family, there are many things that we still do that my grandparents did. This is due to my grandparents passing the tradition to my parents, who then passed it to me and my brother and sister. This is similar to “Anne and the Old One” because I am like Anne in the story.

  3. The book written by Miska Miles, which is called “Annie and the old one”, teaches one the values of tradition. In this book Annie builds a tight bond with her grandmother. Annie was taken back when her mother started to make a rug. In the Navajo culture it is shown here that they believe in many different things. They believe that when the rug that Annie’s mother was working on was completed that the grandmother would pass away. Annie was devastated so she did anything in her power to stop the rug from continuing to be put together. Some of the horrible things she did were being sent home from school and letting the sheep wonder out of the fence. Afterwards Annie learns to accept the finishing of the rug. This story also related to me because when I was smaller I faked sick in order for me to spend a full day with my grandfather. Some days I would cry for hours because I built such a great relationship with him that one day I know that is going to be taken away from me. My parents then talked to me about the situation and now I learned to accept the fact that everyone has their own time and that God will take him away when he feels it is the appropriate time. Even though we will all experience that day when a loved one passes away we have to be strong not only for ourselves but them also. This is also in relation with me because tradition was also passed down through generations in my family. Gatherings and celebrations that my family have were things that my great grandparents and even my parent’s great grandparents attended. I learned to appreciate these gathering and celebrations because it is the only thing that keeps my family knitted together.

  4. Annie and the Old One is an inspirational story, expressing the relationship between Annie and her grandmother. It was a touching story because Annie tried her best to stop her mother from weaving. She decided to be bad and distract her parents. But her grandmother figured out what she was doing and decided to let her know that time cannot be stopped and that everything has to go back to earth. I never experienced this before- knowing that a loved one would pass away and trying my best to keep them alive.
It was a great story, no doubt, how Annie tried to prevent her grandmother from dying. She had a strong relationship with her than to her mother and father. But at the end, she decided to do the right thing and she began weaving.
It would be hard to me as well if that should ever happen.

  5. In “Annie and the Old One” by Miska Miles shows true love between the daughter and the grandmother. Annie loves her grandmother so much that she was willing to stop the weaving of the carpet so her grandmother wouldn’t die. Annie was told as soon as the carpet is made and gets sold that the grandmother will pass away. This shows a strong bond between them, but later Annie learns that she can’t stop time and that if she loves her grandmother a lot she would let her go. This started the new generation of weaving. This is a type of bond that I and my grandmother share. I most definitely would do the same and the little one did.

  6. In “Annie and the Old One” the relationship between the grandma and Annie is very strong, they are almost inseparable. Even when she behaves badly the grandma still cares and is patient with her because she loves her. That is like me with my grandma. I think that all cultures have different foods and such but the connection with their families will always be the same.

  7. Annie and the Old One was a story that seemed like every person can live what happened. Annie has a strong bond with her Grandmother, just like every other culture we have read about so far. Annie tries to stop time in order for her Grandmother to live longer which shows the true love and care Annie has for the old one. The Grandmother is respected greatly in this culture, just as every culture should respect the elderly. In all 3 books we have read, the elderly have either gotten sick or passed away and that is the point in the story where the young learns their lesson to have respect for their elders and cherish every moment with them. This story makes me realize how precious our elders really are to us.

  8. The story Annie And The Old One was a very interesting and intriguing book to have read. This book was about a little girl who was very close to her grandmother and as the story goes on she learns that her grandmother will be dead in short period of time. This was something that was very difficult for Annie to hear because of the relationship she had with her grandmother, but then again it would be difficult for any person to hear at any age. Losing a person is never easy for anyone , I know I've experienced losing someone last year and I cannot explain how difficult it is even now for me to cope with it.

  9. The story "Annie and the Old one" was very moving. Just like most of the books we've read, this is another strong bond between a child and they're grandmother. Annie being so young, she found it very hard to understand why her grandmother would be passing away. In my opinion Annie was very close to her grandmother, and even with every situation in reality it's hard loosing someone close to you, espically someone you have a very strong bond with. Loosing someone when your at a young age is hard to cope with , but you always find some way to pull through.

  10. In “Annie and the Old One” by Miska Miles shows that a very old Navajo grandmother believes it is time her 10-year-old granddaughter, Annie, learns to weave. Annie refuses to believe that her Grandmother, the Old One, will die. Annie learns that she cannot change the course of life. It is very hard for a young girl to think her Grandmother will soon be dead, especially being so close to her. I went through the same thing she did. Knowing one of my Grandparents will soon die. It is a very hard task to do. This story taught me to never take my Grandparents for granted, because you never know when their time will come.

  11. The story "Annie and the Old One" is very similar to all the other books that we read. They are all moving and make us think about the bond we should have with our grandparents. They all show that most cultures are the same in a way. Annie was also close with her grandmother. She wanted her to weave a rug just like Tanya's grandmother wanted her to make a quilt. All these stories had a connection to each one. Annie went through a hard time knowing that her grandmother was going to pass away but she still carried on the tradition. I think the point of all these stories are showing us that our grandparents will always be there for us and always want us to carry on our traditions in our families.

  12. "Annie and the Old One" shows a close relationship between a 9 year old girl, Annie, and her grandmother. In a way, most cultures are similar. I can relate to this story because my grandmother weaves and when I go visit her, she enjoys the extra hand and enjoys hearing other opinions of her work. Although I do not appreciate weaving, I do it anyways to see my grandmother happy. However, no one in the family feels they can carry on the tradition because no one has an interest in weaving. I’m starting to learn to appreciate my grandmother’s weaving because it is a part of the family tradition.

  13. Annie and the Old One is a story that resembles a relationship between a small girl and her grandmother. The basis of the story is similar to the one of Tommie dePaola's: Nana Upstairs and Nana Downstairs. In this story, Annie finds out that when her mother finishes weaving a rug, the grandmother will pass away. Once finding out about this, Annie tries to delay time so her grandmother can stay alive. This gesture shows Annie's love and appreciation for her grandmother. This story can relate to any child that has made up an excuse to stay with someone they cared about. When I was younger I used to want to stay home from school and go visit my grandparents. I loved spending time with them and I realized that people aren't around forever, so I wanted to hang around them as much as possible.

  14. The story “Annie and the Old One” is a very nice story about the relationship of a young girl Annie, and her Grandmother. This story is a written to tell the perspective of the Navajo (American Indian) culture. I thought that it was so nice of Annie to go out into the middle of the night and under her mother’s rug so her grandmother wouldn’t die. This shows that Annie has a lot of love for her grandmother and that she is innocent because the rug isn’t her grandmother’s life time. I also liked how Annie accepted that she will knit when her grandmother pass away, this is like how I must help make tomato sauce with my family now that my grandmother is old.

  15. The story "Annie and the Old One" was and still is a great children's story book that touches everyone. It shows us the relationship between a Navajo child and her grandparents and parents. This was represented through the American Indian culture, but it could be told through any culture. That is whats so great about these books, especially this story. It shows the love for her grandmother from the daughter, and how she accepts that she will knit her grandmothers passing in a rug. This reminds me of when me and my uncle make homemade Italian sausages. We do this to keep tradition, just like the mothers rug for the grandmothers passing.

  16. The children’s novel “Annie and the Old One” is a story about a 9 year old girl, Annie, and her close relationship with her grandmother. Annie being so young, found it very hard to understand why her grandmother was sick and would be passing away. Annie tried to do everything she could to postpone her grandmothers passing. I can relate to this because I too would do anything I could to keep my grandmother around if she was sick and was passing away.

  18. Annie and the Old One shows us the importance of tradition in some cultures. Annie loves your grandmother so much and wants to keep her around as long as she can, we see this when she tries to stall her mother from weaving. We also see how much the grandmother is respected in their family. Annie has a very close relationship with her grandmother. As we have been reading these children’s books I’ve learned the importance of our grandparents and how we should not take them for granted, because the last thing we want is to have regret when there gone.

  19. "Annie and the Old One" was a demostration of true love and hope in a relationship between a grandmother and her granddaughter. The grandmother predicted that once the rug was completed , she would pass on. This left the grand daughter devastated, as it would with anyone, me being someone that hates when my grandparents talk about death. Annie needed to stop the rug from being completed. She tried getting intouble at school so that her mom would have to come to the school and stop working on the rug. This plan failed so she tried everynight to unweave what her mom did that day. Once the grandmother found out she was touched yet dissapointed. I would do the same if there was any way that I could prolong my grandmothers time her with me.

  20. Annie and the Old One is a good story. It shows how connected the Navajo children are with their grandparents. In the story Annie’s grandmother is going to die after they finish working on a carpet so Annie does everything in her power to stop this carpet from being finished. The parts in the story about them making the carpet reminds me of when my Nona would sew my shirts when they would rip and she would always tell me to be careful when I’m outside playing.

  21. Annie and the Old One was a great story which provides great insight into the Navajo culture. It shows how diverse we all are and how we call different things different names. But we can all connect to this stories as we try to hold on to loved ones and different things in our lives whether it be an object or a way of life we can all be sometimes afraid of change.

  22. "It shows how diverse we all are and how we call different things different names. But we can all connect to this stories as we try to hold on to loved ones and different things in our lives whether it be an object or a way of life we can all be sometimes afraid of change." This is interesting Matthew. I was just thinking how each story had a specific object that readers associated with that specific culture: quilts, pies, looms, etc.
This is an easy story to border cross. We all have specifc traditions that represent our culture. Connie writes "I think that all cultures have different foods and such but the connection with their families will always be the same." Joseph, like all of us, are reminded of our own life-experiences, "This reminds me of when me and my uncle make homemade Italian sausages. We do this to keep tradition, just like the mothers rug for the grandmothers passing.

Welcome to the world of border crossing everyone.
