  1. The Patchwork Quilt is a book with great meaning and relates to many different cultures. The African culture is represented in this book as a caring and sharing culture. This is shown through events where Tanya shows care for her grandmother when she is ill. Her grandmother shows care for Tanya when she continues the quilt, even when she is recovering from her illness. The mother is also caring and sharing because she worked with both her mother (the grandmother) and for Tanya. This shows her care for both. This relates to my culture because in my culture, 1st generations are as close to 3rd generations as they are to 2nd generations, and this is shown in The Patchwork Quilt.

  2. I thought that “The Patchwork Quilt” was a very meaningful book. It showed how the grandmother cared deeply for her granddaughter Tanya and how she cared for her grandmother when she was ill. I think that the quilt held memories that were going to be made while time passed making the quilt. Each little square represented something special, like their culture. All cultures have different ways of showing their differences and one of the things that African culture does turns out to be quilt work.

  3. I found that the children’s story, “The Patchwork Quilt” to be a touching tale about a young girl and her love for her grandmother. Tanya’s love is shown when her grandmother is ill and decides to continue working on her grandmother’s home made quilt. I thought that the author did a fantastic job with the characters. She shows the reader that the children are innocent and do not know what is happening to their grandmother. I like how the author allows the character’s culture to be shown in the story. When Tanya asks her grandmother why she is making a quilt she replies that it was a part of their culture. I found this to be interesting because it give a small amount of information about African-American culture. The quilt is meant to symbolize every milestone in one’s life. An example of this would be when the grandmother cuts out a piece of Tanya’s Halloween costume. Aside from the written component of the story, I thought that the illustrations in the book were very colorful and were able to catch the reader’s attention. I liked how each picture had a multitude of colors which helped add affect to each scene. Overall, I thought that the story was both well written and illustrated.

  4. "The Patchwork Quilt" is a wonderful story that tells the audience that the African American culture through story-telling. This story expresses that through generations and time certain traditions begin to fade and soon are forgotten.
Tanya's grandmother made quilts by stitching fabrics that weren't used from special occasions and people. She called it her "masterpiece." I believe she called it her masterpiece because it contains all memories of the past year, and relatively good ones. And as she said, she is never alone because her quilt tells her stories.
This is a wonderful story and many people, not only children, should stop, read and reflect toward the changing world today.

  5. “ The Patchwork Quilt” written by Valerie Flournoy's was a moving and inspirational story. It teaches one the importance of different cultures and the traditions of each. An example is when Tanya asked her grandmother why she is making the quilt and her grandmother responded saying that it is part of their culture. This book does a great job introducing us to the African-American culture and the quilt symbolizes every obstacle they encounter example having to throw out their old clothing that does not fit anymore. The author does a great job in showing the characteristics of each character. She shows that children do not need to know everything that is going on around them especially if it’s something that adults need to handle (their grandmother’s sickness). Aside from the written part the illustrations of the story also paints a vivid picture in one’s mind. The pictures were very colourful and had an exact meaning for each page. Overall this story captures attention because of its meaning and importance of culture.

  6. "The Patchwork Quilt" is a beautifully written children's story book. It was inspirational to read and teaches us the ways of African American culture. The story makes it easy to compare African American culture to your own culture. It seems like the relationship between the young and the elderly in this book is much like Italian culture. The elderly is respected greatly in this book as everyone takes care of the Grandmother when she gets sick. She makes a quilt for her grandchild to let her remember all the past memories they had together.

  7. The Patchwork Quilt to me and many others was a very inspirational book. It changes the way you feel on the inside. You understand the culture more and the love this family has for one another. We should all take a lesson away from this book. For me that lesson was to understand your family, and have more patience for them. The book itself was extremely detailed with pictures and vibrant and vivid colors. Also, the words which the book was written in helped paint a vivid picture in the readers mind. Every change of sentence i had a new scene going on in my mind, and it always kept me interested to learn more about this particular culture. To conclude, I would recommend this book to anyone at any age because its never too late to learn something new about other people in the world, especially with a beautiful book like this.

  9. The Patchwork Quilt is a book that shows us a bit of African culture. It is the first children’s book I’ve read in a while and I enjoyed it. We see the relationship between a grandmother and her grandaughter, there whole relationship and the way they bond is through the stories and patching on the quilt. The story is easy for us to relate it back to our own relationship and culture we have with our grandparents. It is noticed that everyone seems to take special care of the grandmother when she does get sick, I know my family would do the same.

  10. “The Patchwork Quilt” is an inspirational children’s book. This book teaches us about African Culture. The story tells that through generations traditions will be forgotten. Also, it teaches us about how important different cultures are. It showed how much the family loved and cared for each other. For example, when Tanya’s grandmother was sick.

Tanya’s grandmother created quilts by cutting out squares from different fabrics and stitched them together. She referred to it as her masterpiece. The quilt held memories from the time making the quilt. Every square was a different color, it represented that the quilt was something special. Tanya’s grandmother says that she is never alone because the quilt tells her stories.

I would recommend this children’s book to anyone because it is an inspirational story and everyone should learn something new about other cultures in the world.

  11. The children story “The Patchwork Quilt” is a very touching story about the connection between a young girl, her grandmother and African culture. The grandmother introduces the young girl Tanya a part of African culture when she begins making a patchwork quilt. The quilt is made up of patches from old clothing or materials that have sentimental value. Its purpose is to keep wonderful memories. In my culture we keep memories by taking pictures or saving pieces of clothing but, the quilt is a very unique way and I would defiantly want to make one. I also like how Tanya shows a lot of dedication and interest to her grandmother and culture when she continues the quilt when her grandmother is ill. This reminds me when one of my grandmothers was sick I would go over her house and cleanup for her. Finally I found it interesting when the mother offered to buy the grandmother a new quilt instead of her making one. This shows that the mother has very little knowledge of African culture. I guess it depends on where and when one is raised.

  12. "The Patchwork Quilt" is a great introduction into African American culture. The grandmother is instilling her tradition and history into her grand daughter. This is very much the same as in my culture. Grandparents do not want their kids and grandchildren to lose the culture that they had. THe quilt was a work in progress throughout the entire book. Once the grandmother becomes sick, the grand daughter takes it upon herself to complete the quilt showing the love and respect that she has for her grandmother. I try and learn the cooking traditions that my nonna has shown me, just like tonya in the story.

  13. “The Patchwork Quilt” is a children’s short story book basing on the African American culture. We all share special bonds with our grandparents, and this book shows the bond through making a quilt. Each article of fabric used for making the quilt displays a valuable memory. This story shows that through generations, traditions are often forgotten. In this story, the grandmother becomes ill and Tanya decides to continue her family’s tradition and continue making the quilt. This story is relatable to us because we all have been influenced by the elderly.

  14. "The Patchwork Quilt" is an inspiring and meaningful story. It teaches the reader about the African American culture and some of the traditions included in it. The culture is revealed when Tanya asks her grandmother why she's making the quilt, and finds out that it's a tradition created by their race. The author includes the quilt in the story not only to resemble all of the obstacles faced in their lives, but also to show a bond created between Tanya and her Grandmother. Once the grandmother acquires an illness, Tanya feels that it is her responsibility to finish the quilt to show her admiration towards her grandmother. Aside from the written aspect of the story, I feel that the illustrations played an equally important role. The pictures in the book capture the reader's attention with their bright and vivid colours. Overall, I think that this book can relate to anyone that has created a special relationship with a person because it makes you realise that once a strong bond is made, it can never be broken.

  15. "The Patchwork Quilt" was an inspirational children's book on African American culture. When we read this book it made me think of how other cultures bond with one another. Tanya's way of spending her time with her grandmother is by making quilts. Each piece of the quilt was a memory never forgotten. When her grandmother was ill she still continued. It makes us realize that even in other cultures they have traditions that will never fade.

  16. “The Patchwork Quilt” was a great story to reflect upon myself and my culture. This short story shows dedication love even and when times get though. This story shows that traditions may sometime try to fall away like when the mother asks why she is making another quilt. This shows that the mother forgot what the true meaning is about making the quilt. The true meaning about making the quilt is having all the memories trapped in one blanket which would last forever. This remind me about the tradition that my grandparents have, they collect one piece of clothing for every year. They tell me that this shows how big I got and that I’m getting closer to being an adult. That’s why the traditions that many cultures share are special and that they should be kept and not forgotten.

  17. My opinion on The Patchwork quilt is that I think it is a great book. It has so much
hidden meaning behind it. The African culture is throughly represented through this book. The african culture comes off as a caring , nice and sharing culture. An example of caring is when Tanya's grandmother is sick, and Tanya's very worried. By Tanya being worried this means that she cares. The quilt that they were making, held alot of meaningful memories and by Tanya and Grandma putting them in a quilt , they will never forget any of those things. I would reccomend this book to people who enjoy different cultures. Or even young children that have an interest in different cultures.

  19. "The Patchwork Quilt" in my opinion was a very interesting book to have read, this book teaches readers much about the African American culture. The story shows that people may sometimes forget about the older traditions, a perfect example of that is when the grandmother is working on the quilt and her daughter also known as Tanya's mother walks in the room and tells her that she could buy her one of a much better quality. My favourite part in this story is the making of the quilt because each of the squares sown into it meant something and had it's own individual memory. This book reminds me of me and my grandmother because she'd always be teaching me how to do things the "old fashioned way" and say that nothing beats it, she taught me how to bake Italian pastries, pasta, and all kinds of other food.

  20. The Patchwork Quilt, is the story of how a young girl named Tanya learns to treasure and value her own family traditions. It connects generations and develops an understanding and appreciation of traditions and leaving a legacy. When Grandma becomes ill, Tanya decides to finish Grandma's masterpiece with the help of her family. This taught me to always help out people, it is good to do good deeds.

  21. Personally i enjoyed the book The Patchwork Quilt. It is of African American culture. I come from an Italian based culture and this story is something that could happen within any culture. It really makes me think about different cultures because although we have different foods and some different religions, we are all the same people. God made us all equal. The relationship between this family is beautiful. My nonna from my dad's side always used to knit; i would say it was her hobby. I would always admire her work but when she would offer to teach me, i was never really interested. I took that for granted and i realized that after she passed away. I regret not letting her teach me because that is something that can be passed down through the generations. This book taught me not to take the things we learn for granted because there is always a meaning behind everything.

  22. "The Patchwork Quilt" in my opinion was a beautiful children's novel. It taught the reader about African American culture and some of the traditions that belong to it. An example of when this culture is expressed is when tanya's grandmother is sewing a quilt out of all the scraps of clothing that the family has either thrown out or grown out of over the years. The author uses the symbol of the quilt to resemble the struggles and accomplishments in their lives but also to show how tanya and her grandmother build a stronger relaitonship when they make the quilt together. When reading this novel I began to think of how I also took part in doing something from my grandparents culture. An example is when I help my grandmother at christmas and make all the traditional deserts for Christmas Eve with the family. I really enjoy doing this because I create a stronger bond with my grandmother just like tanya did.

  23. I do not think The Patchwork Quilt really appeals specifically to one culture, I think that the lessons taught in the story can be applied to nearly anything as it shows that hard work and determination pay off. I believe that the quilt is a symbol of diversity within a family and it shows how families may not always agree for example when Tanya's mother says, "I can just go to the store and buy you a quilt." but Tanya's grandmother refuses. The quilt is also a symbol of how even though families may not always agree with each other it is important that they keep a strong bond with each other.

  24. "Once the grandmother becomes sick, the grand daughter takes it upon herself to complete the quilt showing the love and respect that she has for her grandmother." Emily makes a very valid point. Aren't all these stories about love and respect. Every culture will show the love and respect that exists between the children and the elderly. "My nonna from my dad's side always used to knit; i would say it was her hobby. I would always admire her work but when she would offer to teach me, i was never really interested. I took that for granted and i realized that after she passed away." Isn't this true of everyone. We never appreciate something until we no longer have it.

Great comment everyone. Excellent looking blog!
